The city of Cluj - Napoca is in the central part of Transylvania.
Surrounded on three sides by hills and hillocks with heights ranging between 500 and 700 m, its aspect resembles that of a real fortress.

The most important town centre in Transylvania is a city bearing two names: Napoca is the name of the old Dacian fortress, and Cluj is the Latin name by which it was later know (coming from Clausum – as the city is enclosed, and quartered between the hills).

Being a major cultural, university and industrial centre, Cluj - Napoca boasts fine contributions to the Romanian culture and science. It is also an important centre of scientific research and technological development. The city of Cluj-Napoca also stands out as a significant cultural centre through its two drama theatres, two opera houses, two puppet theatres, four cultural centres, a philharmonic orchestra, six museums, among which the National Museum of Transylvanian History dating from the 19th century.
