The name Corfu (Kèrkyra) names not only the island, but also its capital, which is a beautiful, sophisticated and charming town. It is also one of the most elegant island capitals in the whole of Greece, as it was modernised for the 1994 EU summit.
The architecture in town is influenced by the French, the Italians and the British, but it still has a contemporary Greek feel to it, which makes it an amazing place to visit.
Museum of Asian Art
The Museum of Asian Art is housed in a former state room in the Palace of St. Michael and St. George. The museum is a ‘must-see’ for aficionados of art and antiquities from Far East and India.
The Neo Frourio
The Neo Frourio, also known as New Fortress, is an old military complex loaded with interesting tunnels, cellars and dungeons. It provides excellent views of the Old Town and the bay. Look out for the two lions of St. Mark and the Venetians inscriptions on the bastion walls above.
Cavalieri Roof Terrace
Located at the roof top of the Cavalieri hotel, this stunning bar can be heaven at night and stays open until the early hours of the morning. Here you can expect a very good atmosphere and an excellent drink selection.
Good to know
From central Corfu there are buses to take you to different destinations on the island and they are reasonably reliable. The long distance buses leave from the bus station which is close to the New Port in Corfu Town and the local bus station is on Pleteia San Rocco. The green buses are the long distance ones and the blue buses are local. If you do not like the buses there is always the possibility of hiring a car or a motorcycle to take you around the island’s lovely and attractive beaches.
